Thoughts for the Month

The last month of the year, this is when we celebrate Christmas. What is Christmas? Sadly, for many, it is just a time to receive and give presents, to eat and drink too much, to get more and more fraught with all the preparations needed to have a good time. Little thought is given to the true meaning of Christmas.

It is important that the real meaning of Christmas is not forgotten. It is a special time to remember the birth of the Christ Child, God’s Son, theSaviour of the world.

It is time to think back to the story of the child born in a stable, because there was no room at the inn; to think of the news delivered to the shepherds, some of the least important and poorest members of society at the time; to think of the lengthy journey made by the Magi (the Wise Men or three Kings) who followed a star; to remember an amazing story that happened over 2,000 years ago.

It is a story of simplicity and wonder that does not need to be remembered by spending huge amounts of money or by eating or drinking too much. It is a time when we should be offering thanks and praise for the precious gift of the Child who was born to save us all. It is a time when we should give thanks for the gift of families and friends, not by spending vast amounts of money most of us can ill afford, but by spending quality time with each other.

‘Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head….’ That is what Christmas is.
